Most compressor breakdowns we see in the workshop could have been avoided with a few simple checks. Here is what to do and when.

Daily

  • Drain the water from the tank. Moisture builds up every time the compressor runs and rusts the tank from the inside.
  • Listen for new noises or air leaks.

Weekly

  • Check the oil level on lubricated compressors and top up with compressor oil, not engine oil.
  • Check the intake filter and clean it if dusty.
  • Check hoses and couplings for damage or leaks.

Every 3 to 6 months

  • Change the oil (follow the hours in your manual).
  • Replace the intake filter.
  • On belt drive units, check belt tension and wear.
  • Pull the safety valve ring briefly to check it is not stuck.

Yearly

  • Have the compressor serviced.
  • Have the air receiver examined. Pressure vessels used at work need periodic examination by a competent person under health and safety law.

Warning signs

  • Compressor runs constantly or takes longer to fill
  • Oil in the air line
  • Overheating or tripping
  • Water spitting from tools
