Air Line Couplings Explained: PCL, Euro and Claw

If you have ever bought a new air tool and found the plug will not go into your hose, you have met the coupling problem. Different coupling profiles look similar but do not connect to each other.

How couplings work

A quick release system has two halves. The coupling (female socket) goes on the hose. The adaptor (male plug) goes on the tool or outlet. The coupling has a valve that shuts off the air when you disconnect.

PCL Standard

The most common profile in Irish and UK garages and workshops. PCL also makes 60 Series and 100 Series couplings for tools that need higher flow, and Safe Flow couplings that vent the downstream air before release.

Euro

Widely used on European tools and compressors, including many ABAC units. A Euro adaptor will not fit a PCL coupling, so check what your compressor and tools use before buying.

Claw couplings

Used on larger air and water hoses, often on sites and with breakers. They connect with a quarter turn and should always be fitted with a safety clip or safety collar.

Which should I choose?

  • Match what you already have so all your tools connect.
  • If you are starting fresh, PCL Standard is the easiest to find parts for in Ireland.
  • Use a high flow coupling for sanders, grinders and big impact wrenches.
